The #1 Question Everyone Asks is...

Will Everyone Carrying A Smart Phone Receive Notifications From My Beacons?

While it would be so wonderful to engage with everyone near your beacons, technologically it is not possible due to the variety and age of smartphones that people carry with the apps they install.

The #2 Question Everyone Asks is...

Who Will Be Able To The See Messages Broadcasted From My Beacons?

The answer is Android smartphone users that have Bluetooth and location services turned on. While many turned these settings off only a couple years ago, most people have them turned on today to use many of their device's features.

The #3 Question Everyone Asks is...

What About iPhone Users—Wouldn't I Be Missing The Majority Of The Market?

According to Gartner Group and Kantar research, the Android market is the majority globally and in the U.S.  Android smartphones represents more than 80% of the market globally (1Q17), and in the U.S. Android users represent more than 64% of the market share(2Q17).

Reality check ...

We realize what is most important to business owners is reaching as many people as possible at the lowest cost possible.  In reality, if you had to choose, wouldn't you prefer to reach 60% of the market rather than 40% of the market? The easy answer here is, once all varieties and settings are considered, that approximately 1 in every 4 people carrying a smartphone will receive notifications from our beacons without needing to install any special apps.  Compared to all other types of marketing, this is an excellent opportunity to promote your business very cost effectively.

More Frequently Asked Questions...

Are the beacons warranted and for how long?

Yes.  We offer a 1 year warranty on our beacons.  If at anytime the hardware fails, return it to us and we will issue a replacement.  Please keep in mind, you are still responsible for the battery.  That is not covered.  If the hardware failure is due to physical damage, we do not replace those.  Immersion in water would be considered physical damage.  See the definition of IP66 waterproof further down.  For replacements, contact us via our support page and we will issue an RMA number.  You pay for shipping to us and we will pay for shipping to you. We simply ask that you get a tracking number for any shipment to us.

Are there any ‘per click’ costs each time someone sees my beacon message?

No, there are no ‘per click’ charges. We charge only the monthly plan fee for an unlimited number of clicks and views.

Do I need a website in order to use beacon marketing?

No, you do not need to have a website in order to use beacon marketing to promote your business. We provide cloud-based, mobile friendly hosting for your content. If you desire to expand your online presence or are in need of a website, please ask us and we will gladly share ideas that suit your business needs and integrate well with beacon marketing campaigns.

Do I or potential customers need an app in order to receive notifications from beacons?

No, your business does not need a specific app and potential customers do not need to download any special app in order to receive beacon marketing messages that promotes your business.  Android smartphones receive notifications thanks to a part of the Android operating system called Google Nearby.  As long as Bluetooth and locations service are turned on, Google Nearby will see messages from beacons that are in proximity.

Is my marketing beacon hard to set up?

No, you just need to turn it on and place it.

What kind of campaigns can I create using beacons?

Beacons can be used to create a variety of campaigns to send contextual offers, increase store visits, turn your mannequins into smart mannequins, target customers passing by your establishment etc.

What is a Beacon?

Beacons are low-cost, low-powered transmitters equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy or BLE (also called Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth Smart) that can be used to deliver proximity-based, context-aware messages.

A beacon transmits signals which allows another device to determine its proximity to the broadcaster. In a store, a beacon lets a customer’s app determine that it’s close to a particular aisle, or in a particular department. The beacon doesn’t transmit content, it simply transmits a signal that lets a user’s phone or tablet figure out what its proximity is to the beacon.

What is BLE?

Bluetooth Low Energy (also called Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth Smart) is the specification for the type of signals that beacons transmit. Bluetooth LE has the advantage that it is low energy and is ‘native’ to most modern phones and tablets.

How are beacons different from GPS? Are beacons better than GPS for geo-location?

In terms of range, beacons function in between NFC (too narrow) and GPS (too broad) ranges, and that is what makes it more effective than the other two.

They are ideal for detecting smartphones indoors, where GPS isn’t always effective, and can communicate with apps on devices when they are indoors.

How are beacons different from NFC?

NFC range is up to 8 inches but the optimal range is < 2 inches. With BLE technology, beacons have a significantly larger range, of approximately 100 yards.

Are the beacons really waterproof? What is IP66 waterproof?

Our beacons are rated IP66. IP stands for Ingress Protection. The most common ratings are IP65, 66, 67, 68. For quick reference, these are defined as:

IP65 enclosure - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against water projected from a nozzle.

IP66 enclosure - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water.

IP67 enclosure - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against immersion.

IP68 enclosure - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against complete, continuous submersion in water.

What is the battery-life of a beacon?

Most beacons have a battery life of two years as the energy consumption is really low. The battery is generally non-rechargeable and needs to be replaced.

What is the range of a beacon’s signal?

The typical range of Bluetooth low-energy radio modules is up to 100 m (300 ft.). Maximum range is achieved with direct line of sight. Range is reduced in the presence of any types of physical barriers. It depends on the location too, because radio signals can be absorbed or diffracted.

How precise is beacon-detection indoors?

Though it depends on the intended use and immediate surroundings too, generally one could detect the presence of beacons as far away as 50-70 meters or as little as 10 inches, so it is very accurate.

Which devices are compatible with Eddystone enabled beacons?

All Bluetooth 4.0-enabled devices are capable of picking up BLE signals, these include all Android devices manufactured since 2013.

Can beacons be placed outdoors?

Beacons can be placed outdoors, however temperature affects battery life. Some beacons are also waterproof so they can be placed outdoors. External environment changes such as rains can reduce the range of the signal though.

Do beacons send in-store offers based on shopper locations or do apps?

This is a very common misconception about beacons. Beacons do not send notifications to a user’s phone; apps do. Beacons simply send a unique identifier to an app (akin to a geographic landmark), to tell the app that it is entering the beacon range. That signal makes an app aware that it’s time to send the user a notification, trigger messages or perform an action. Beacons don’t transmit content — they transmit a location, enabling apps to retrieve and surface location-relevant content.

Do beacons in stores track shoppers?

Beacons are transmit only. They do not receive or collect any signals from mobile devices. These devices don’t detect the presence of a shopper’s mobile device and therefore have no ability to track his/her location.

The relevant app on a mobile device is actually what detects the beacons. More specifically, an app installed on the mobile device can ask to be notified when the device nears a specific beacon. This works very similar to how geofences work when a mobile device crosses into a specific geographic location.

How can a user opt-out of in-store tracking?

If a user does not want to interact with beacons, he/she can opt-out by not allowing the app to use location services (Android), turning Bluetooth off, or disabling Google Nearby.

Where are beacons being implemented?

Though beacon-enabled applications are largely revolutionizing retail, other industries are already tapping into beacon’s micro-location capabilities to deliver specifically targeted personalized messages, alerts in stadiums, theme parks, museums, hotels, airports, etc.

What is Eddystone?

Eddystone is an open BLE beacon format introduced by Google, that takes the primary capability of beacons — their ability to broadcast a unique number via short-range Bluetooth signals — and extends it to a greater degree. It is cross-platform and capable of supporting Android, iOS or any platform that supports BLE beacons.
